The American Church and the Culture Wars (1960-2024)

Instructor: Glen Thompson

Description:
The Cold War, the McCarthy era, the electing of a Catholic president, the Civil Rights Movement and integration, Roe v. Wade, the Vietnam War, Gay Rights, COVID protocols, Christian Nationalism—various parts of the American church has condemned, approved of, or ignored these and other events in our modern world. Confidence in the trustworthiness of our government and its leaders, and in other institutions such as the church itself, has plummeted. Church bodies and individual congregations have been torn apart by these and other issues. While reviewing the political and cultural history of America over the past 75 years, this course will examine the moral and Scriptural justification given by various church groups for their positions for and against key issues and provide a Lutheran perspective for pastors seeking to keep their members focused on the Gospel while being engaged citizens of their communities.

During Winterim 2027, this course runs for one week (January 11–15, 2027) from 9:50am–12:30pm each day.
